Potential Diversity of Local Rice Genetic Resources in Kuantan Singingi District, Riau Province

Abstract
This research aimed to explore the potential of locally cultivated rice by farmers in the Kuantan Singingi
Regency that can be preserved. This preservation will maintain the local genetic resources and prevent them from being replaced by commercial varieties. This study was a descriptive research based on two types of data, namely primary and secondary data. Primary data were obtained from surveys and direct interviews with farmers in the Kuantan Singingi Regency. Secondary data were collected from books, articles, and related reports. The interview results indicated that farmers in Kuantan Singingi cultivated 18 varieties of rice. Padi Kuning (14 percent) and Sokan (14 percent) were the local varieties most commonly cultivated by Kuantan Singingi farmers. Farmers preferred the Padi Kuning variety because it produces white rice, has no off-putting odour, and resulted sticky rice. Additionally, farmers in Kuantan Singingi also cultivate the Bimas variety at 12 percent, Bimas 24, Pandan Wangi, and 14 other local varieties. However, farmers still need a clearer understanding of proper cultivation techniques. In conclusion, many farmers in Kuantan Singingi continue cultivating local rice varieties with the potential for development and preservation.
